“A City That Will Surprise You and a Country That Will Move You.”

Welcome to Chennai

Most of our patients arrive in Chennai focused entirely on their medical treatment, which is understandable. But many leave with something they did not expect. A genuine affection for this extraordinary city and the people in it. Chennai is warm, vibrant, safe, and welcoming, and for patients spending two to four weeks here, understanding the city makes the journey far easier and far richer.

Chennai, formerly Madras, is the capital of Tamil Nadu, India's southernmost state, and a city of approximately 10 million people. It sits on the Bay of Bengal and enjoys a tropical climate year-round. It is India's healthcare capital for liver transplant and orthopaedic surgery, home to one of India's oldest and most respected private hospital networks (Apollo, founded here in 1983), and a city with a rich cultural heritage stretching back more than 2,000 years.

For international medical patients, Chennai offers a compelling combination. World-class hospitals that are geographically compact (most major hospitals are within 30–40 minutes of the airport), an extensive range of serviced apartments and hotels near hospital clusters, excellent food at all price points, and a population known across India for its hospitality and warmth toward visitors.

English is widely spoken in Chennai's medical and commercial districts. Medical professionals at all partner hospitals are fluent in English, and many speak French. For Francophone and Lusophone patients, HMT provides dedicated translation support throughout.

Getting Around Chennai

Chennai is a large city, but for most HMT patients, daily movement is limited to the triangle of your accommodation, the hospital, and nearby restaurants and shops. Your HMT concierge manages all transport from arrival to departure.

  • Airport to Accommodation:Your HMT concierge arranges a pre-booked private taxi or rideshare. The journey time from Chennai International Airport to most hospital areas is 20–45 minutes.
  • Hospital Transfers:HMT books all hospital appointment transfers typically via Ola or Uber (Chennai's equivalent of ride-hailing apps, which work seamlessly and are very affordable).
  • Local Taxis:Ola and Uber operate across Chennai. Fares are low by international standards. A typical hospital-to-accommodation trip costs $2–$5.
  • Auto-Rickshaws:Three-wheeled tuk-tuks are abundant and cheap for short distances. Your HMT concierge will advise on fair pricing.
  • Metro:Chennai's modern metro system connects key districts. Not typically used by medical patients but useful for mobile companions exploring the city.

Where You'll Stay

HMT negotiates pre-arranged rates with a curated selection of serviced apartments and hotels near each of our partner hospitals.

HMT's standard accommodation recommendation for most patients is a furnished serviced apartment at $50–$70 per night. These apartments offer a small kitchen (useful for post-surgery dietary preparation), more space than a hotel room, and a home-like environment that supports recovery far better than a hospital-adjacent guesthouse. Your concierge manages the check-in, apartment inventory, and housekeeping throughout your stay.

Food & Eating

Food & Eating in Chennai: Chennai is a food lover's paradise, particularly for patients on medically supervised diets, as Tamil Nadu's cuisine is naturally vegetable-rich, low in red meat, and prepared with a variety of anti-inflammatory spices that have been central to Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Do not be intimidated by Indian food if it is unfamiliar. Your HMT concierge will guide you to the right restaurants and help you navigate menus based on your dietary requirements.

  • Hospital Catering:All partner hospitals provide patient meals during inpatient stay, prepared to dietary and post-operative specifications. Companions can access hospital cafeterias.
  • Cost:A full meal at a good local restaurant costs $3–$8. A meal at a mid-range international restaurant costs $10–$20. Grocery runs to stock a serviced apartment are very affordable.

Culture, People & Temples

Tamil Nadu has one of the oldest continuous civilisations on earth, and Chennai is its proud modern expression. The people of Tamil Nadu are known throughout India for their warmth toward visitors, their deep respect for education and medicine, and their generous hospitality.

  • Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Mylapore:One of the oldest and most beautiful Dravidian temples in South India — a genuinely moving experience, open to all visitors.
  • Marina Beach:The world's second longest urban beach, stretching 13km along the Bay of Bengal. A beautiful place for a gentle evening walk during recovery.
  • The Government Museum, Egmore:One of India's oldest museums — excellent collection of South Indian bronzes, Roman antiquities, and natural history.
  • Fort St. George:Built by the British East India Company in 1644 — the first English fortress in India. A fascinating piece of colonial and post-colonial history.
  • Mahabalipuram (60km from Chennai):A UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary 7th-century rock-carved temples and seashore sculptures. A wonderful half-day excursion for patients cleared for light activity.

Safety & Practical Tips

  • Safety:Chennai is one of India's safest major cities. Medical tourism areas are well-policed and comfortable for international patients and companions.
  • Currency:Indian Rupee (INR). 1 USD ≈ 90 INR. ATMs widely available. USD cash accepted at many medical-adjacent services. Carry $200–$300 USD cash as backup.
  • SIM Card:HMT includes an Indian SIM card in your welcome kit. Data is inexpensive with unlimited 4G plans costing approximately $5–$10/month.
  • Power:India uses Type C, D, and M plugs (220V). Bring a universal adapter. All hotels and hospitals have USB charging in rooms.
  • Dress:Modest dress is appreciated, particularly at temples and in traditional markets. Pack light, breathable fabrics such as linen and cotton are ideal in Chennai's climate.
  • Tipping:Not obligatory but appreciated. 10% at restaurants is generous. A small tip to hospital nurses and support staff is warmly received.

Shopping

Shopping in Chennai: Many patients, particularly those with a companion, enjoy the opportunity to shop during their recovery period. Your concierge will assist you with shopping selections that range from traditional markets to large shopping malls.

Pharmacy

Medications & Pharmacy: This is where SADC patients save most dramatically. Brand-name medications that cost $200/month at home may cost $15–$30 at an Indian pharmacy for the identical drug. Your HMT concierge will assist you in stocking up on your 3–6 month prescription before departure.
